July/August Update from the Executive Director

When I first starting doing this work, one of the first books I read was by former Judge Irene Sullivan called "Raised by the Courts." In the book a story is told that I often repeat to remind our community that it takes all of us to protect our children-and they are ALL OUR CHILDREN

Back when Indian tribes roamed our great earth to find better hunting or more protected land, they would meet other tribes also on the move and share information-asking questions like how was the weather or the hunting? But the smartest tribes always asked: "How are the children?" first. For these tribes knew that if the children were well all else would fall into place.
How are our children doing in Florida? The challenges facing the child welfare system continue to grow. Recent news reports of children lacking placements and sleeping in agency offices revealed a number that should concern each and every one of us-a 40% increase in the past few months of children coming into care. We often say "the children need you now" and that is more true today than ever.
Children coming into care have more complex needs than in the past and are staying in care longer than before. This is precisely the reason the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay exists-to ensure the rights and needs for children in care are met, and often times children need more than the State can provide.
This month, I'm so thankful for all the people and community groups that share our belief that children should not only survive but thrive, including but not limited to: Clearwater Woman's Community ClubGFWC North Pinellas Woman's ClubJunior Service League of Greater New Port Richey, and the Rotary Club of Dunedin
You can also learn more about a donation from the 100 Women Who Care of Pinellas County to support recruitment, training and retention of GAL volunteers here and a donation from the American Contract Bridge League Charity Foundation to support tutoring and normalcy here.
It takes a village-and we are so thankful for volunteers who give of their time and talent and donors who give of their treasure-we couldn't do it without you! The children we serve thank you for making their lives just a little bit easier during turbulent times.
Don't forget to support our youth by signing up for the SuperHero 5K Run, Walk & Stroller Roll-discount codes are available below under "Upcoming Events" and you can find information on sponsorships, registration, and race logistics by visiting www.thesuperhero5k.com. We hope to see you there!
