May/June 2018 Executive Director Update

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

We kicked off this month by being a part of the 5th Annual Give Day Tampa Bay and together our community raised 1.7 million dollars to assist local charities. Because of YOU, we exceeded our goal and raised $21,000 in one day to send more children in care to summer camp or tutoring services. We had 67 unique donors participate and some of them were new to the organization-most likely because at some point one of our volunteers shared their story with a friend or family member about how they volunteer to help hurting children heal during a turbulent time in their life.

Don't miss June 1st (new extended deadline) to apply for camp funding for a case you serve. Everything you need to know can be found right here. So far 98 children have been approved for support and assistance is available on a first come, first served basis. We know that normalcy is such an important part of changing their story and so are YOU. This month is National Foster Care Month and the statistics are only getting worse. We can't thank you, our Guardian ad Litem volunteers and donors, enough for standing in the gap for our most vulnerable children.

This newsletter is packed with resources-and if you haven't seen the offices lately-they are too. We have birthday bags with toys and gift cards, celebration bags with cake, decorations, and everything you need to throw a party, diapers, formula, pack and plays, life start kits for teens aging out and lots of other items to help you support the children you advocate for. We are able to provide these in-kind resources because of generous collection drives done through women's groups, book clubs, churches and other civic groups. If you would like to organize a drive to help with something related to back to school-please let us know-contact amyf@galf6.org. Please note we are only able to accept new, unused items and we request advance notice in order to coordinate assistance at an office location.

We can't wait to see you In October at our 4th Annual SuperHero 5K, Walk & Stroller Roll. This year is going to be the best yet with carnival and other fall themed family friendly activities-whether you are a runner or not-we hope to see you there. We are currently seeking sponsorships to help support the race and you can also register here. Hint: This edition of the newsletter includes a discount code for you and your GAL children!

As always, we strive to be nimble and meet the needs of our GAL volunteers. If you have ideas for fundraisers, activities for children, trainings, or places to help recruit more advocates for children, we want to hear from you. Don't hesitate to reach out to Amy or Tawnee at amyf@galf6.org or iamforthechild@galf6.org
